Colombia's Court Hosts First Legal Trial in the Metaverse

Colombia's Magdalena Administrative Court recently held its first judicial trial in the metaverse, an immersive virtual reality environment that enhances the realism of digital settings. Participants in a traffic dispute appeared as avatars in a virtual courtroom during the two-hour session, with the magistrate's avatar clad in black judicial robes.

Immersive Experience of the Metaverse

Magistrate Maria Quinones Triana described the metaverse experience as "wonderful," and she intends to proceed with the trial, maybe even the judgment. While court proceedings have shifted to virtual sessions, few have dabbled with the metaverse.

Potential of the Metaverse in Legal Proceedings

The experiment was not well received, with 70% of viewers disapproving. The primary problems involved with employing the metaverse in court procedures are accessibility and expense.

Challenges with the Metaverse in Legal Proceedings

According to Juan David Gutierrez, a public policy expert at the Colombia's University of Rosario, this requires technology that few people have, raising concerns about access to justice and equality.

Advocating for the Metaverse in Cases of Abuse

Quinones argued for using the metaverse in situations of abuse but agreed that costs and accessibility must be discussed. Gutierrez added that Colombian judges are looking for solutions to relieve the overburdened court system, but he cautioned that technology may not always make things more efficient.

Exploring the Potential of the Metaverse in Legal Proceedings

Quite apart from obstacles, the potential of the metaverse in judicial procedures is being investigated. Other nations and legal systems can investigate the prospects of the metaverse while tech behemoths like Microsoft and Meta strive to develop it.
